Volunteerism

Target’s commitment to the community is demonstrated in part through the time and talent contributed by our team members.

We are proud of our team members’ commitment to making our communities a better place to live and work through a variety of efforts such as pro bono services, helping to address food insecurity, keeping communities safe and clean and many more ways that match team members’ interests and local needs.

Target team members continue their commitment to communities by donating nearly one million hours of volunteer service annually.*

Our team is generous with their time no matter the location or time of year, and rallies around several pro bono programs and moments such as Earth Month, National Volunteer Week, 9/11 Day of Service, our Annual Giving Campaign, Holiday and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Pro bono

In 2020, Target launched pro bono consulting services for 40 Black- and Indigenous-owned small businesses as well as other small businesses owned by people of color in the Twin Cities to help with rebuilding efforts following the murder of George Floyd.

During 2021, the program expanded to also include Atlanta, Chicago and the Bay Area, with 53 new clients.

While Target pledges an annual commitment of 10,000 hours of support through this program, we exceeded that goal in 2022, providing 16,000 hours of consulting services.

Since the inception of the program, Target has partnered with over 150 clients, engaged over 600 team members and provided over 30,000 hours of consulting services valued at more than $6 million.

Team member giving

Our team members have supported their communities through a giving campaign since 1962. In 2022, Target team members donated more than $8 million through our Team Member Giving Campaign, including over $1 million to our Team Member Giving Fund, which provides team members who are facing personal financial hardship with tax-free support.

Holiday

In 2022, nearly 1,900 Target stores and 44 supply chain facilities participated in the Great Giftogether, providing comfort and joy to families in their communities. Team members shopped for, wrapped and delivered gifts to nonprofit partners that were helping to spread holiday cheer.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Our team embraces the legacy of Dr. King through recognition of a day of service every January. In 2023, Target team members participated in nearly 90 service projects spread across the country, totaling over 3,000 hours of volunteering. In addition, thousands joined in for a week of webinars that gave team members the opportunity to learn more about the life and legacy of Dr. King and how they can support a more equitable future for all.
